In addition to the privately-funded growth at developments like Panama Pacifico, the government of Panama has demonstrated an interest in fostering the future economic and physical development of this entire area. The government recently signed a contract under which the Cinta Costera, which is the main beltway running along the coast through and around Panama City, is to be extended in such a way as to provide a highway bypass to some of the most congested portions of the city; the project to construct the extension already is in its first phase. For the second phase of the project, the extension will link to a new bridge that is planned to be built over the Panama Canal, which in turn will provide direct highway access to Panama Pacifico. The current president of Panama has indicated he would like the bridge to be completed by the time he leaves office in the year 2014.
